Kolkata, October 26: The pro-union lobby in the newly-emerging Information Technology sector in Kolkata got a new voice of support today. The State’s Transport Minister, Subhas Chakraborty, who is also the vice-president of the CITU, sprang to the defence of those who want to form unions in the IT sector.

“People think that these men in coat-and-tie are a happy lot. But they don’t know the tremendous amount of exploitation they face,” said Chakraborty, talking about the IT sector staff. “Their guardians spent lakhs of rupees for their education, but they end up earning a paltry sum of Rs 3000 to Rs 4000 per month,” he added.

Chakraborty’s statement today came as a shot in the arm for the West Bengal Information Technology Services Association (WBITSA), that is being launched by the CITU — the labour arm of the CPI(M).

Chakraborty went on to say “as long as there will be grounds for confrontation and contradiction, there will be need for formation of organisations and unions.”
