WBITSA (West Bengal IT Service Association) has backing of Jyoti Basu

Kolkata, Oct 27, 2006: West Bengal IT Service Association today received crucial support from veteran CPI(M) leader Jyoti Basu in its efforts to form a union in the information technology sector.

Basu, reaffirmed the employees’ right to form an association. “If employees there have grievances and complaints, they should have a right to form their organisation,” he said. At the end of the CPI(M)’s state secretariat meeting today, Basu said: “The IT sector should be treated as an essential service. Strikes and other trade union activities should be restricted in this sector.”

Fulfilling a long time demand of the Information Technology(IT) sector workers of West Bengal, West Bengal Information Technology Services Association (WBITSA) is being launched from November 14.

Prasanta Nandichowdhury, working president of the proposed West Bengal IT Services Association, said: "The new unit will not be registered under the Trade Union Act. We have registered the unit under the Societies Registration Act."

"Ours will be a broad platform for all categories of IT professionals. There will be IT workers, executives and others. If any IT unit or any individual wishes to associate himself with our organisation, we will give them recognition," the working president said.

IT workers can apply for membership online. The website of the association is being hosted at www.wbitsa.org
